2018–2025 Nesting Bots Series and Soul Bots Series

Since 2000, my sculptural practice has focused on incorporating computer components as metaphors for the human condition. By juxtaposing technological materials with organic forms, I create a dialogue between nature and culture, highlighting the evolving relationship between humans and machines.

Materials such as heat sinks, cooling fans, and circuit boards function as symbols of our technological era. In the Nesting Bots and Soul Bots series these hybrid forms examine the interface between humanity, nature, and technology, questioning how technological systems increasingly shape both human experience and the natural world.

“In her recent sculpture-series, Soul Bots and Nesting Bots, she juxtaposes computer parts such as aluminum heat sinks and cooler fans with vividly colored, fired clay objects whose distorted geometric volumes bear bodily connotations. Amalgams of industrial fragments and hand-made vessels, Soul Bots are part bodies and part objects. By uniting the commercially fabricated, metal computer parts that imply gyrating motion with stillness of the often amusingly erotic clay bodies, Lay animates and reclaims the object world of contemporary technology.” - Agnes Berecz; PAT LAY: MULTIDIMENSIONAL, catalog essay, April 2024, Elza Kayal Gallery, NYC
